⌨️Typing Speed Test

Measure your typing speed and accuracy in real time — pick 15, 30 or 60 seconds and watch your WPM climb.

About this game

A typing speed test measures two things at once: how many words you can type in a set amount of time, and how accurately you type them. Speed is expressed in words per minute (WPM), calculated from the number of correct characters you type divided by five — the average word length — and normalized to a full minute. Accuracy is simply the share of characters you typed correctly out of everything you typed, including any mistakes you had to type over.

This test scrolls a stream of common English words a few lines at a time so you always know what's coming next. Type each word and press space to lock it in — correct letters turn green, mistakes turn red, and finished words fade so you can focus on what's ahead. Pick a 15-second sprint for a quick check, 30 seconds for a balanced round, or a full minute for a more stable reading, and your best WPM for each length is saved right on your device.

How to play

  1. Choose a round length — 15, 30 or 60 seconds — from the buttons above the text box.
  2. Tap or click anywhere in the text box to bring up your keyboard (or just start typing on desktop).
  3. Type the highlighted word exactly as shown, then press space to move on to the next one.
  4. Keep going — the timer only starts on your first keystroke, so there's no rush to begin.
  5. When time runs out, check your WPM, accuracy and correct/incorrect word count, then try to beat your best.

Tips & strategy

  • Accuracy first, speed second — a single typo often costs you more time than typing a bit slower would have.
  • Keep your eyes on the screen, not your fingers; trust muscle memory to find the keys.
  • Rest your fingers on the home row (ASDF / JKL;) between words so every reach starts from the same place.
  • Warm up with a 15-second round before jumping into a full 60-second test — a loose hand types faster.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good typing speed?

Most people who type casually average around 40 words per minute. Professional typists — people who type for a living, such as transcriptionists — commonly reach 65-75 WPM, and competitive typists can exceed 120 WPM. Any of these levels can be improved steadily with regular short practice sessions.

How exactly is WPM calculated here?

We count every correctly typed character, divide that count by five — the length of an average word — then divide by the elapsed time in minutes. This is the standard way typing tests measure speed, and it rewards clean, accurate typing rather than just fast keystrokes with lots of errors.

Does the test save my results?

Yes. Your best WPM for each round length (15, 30 and 60 seconds) is stored locally in your browser, so you can track your progress over time and try to beat your own record. Nothing is uploaded and no account is required to play.
