About this game
2048 is a sliding-tile puzzle played on a 4×4 grid. Every swipe moves all tiles in one direction; when two tiles with the same number collide, they merge into one tile worth their sum. After each move a new 2 (or occasionally a 4) appears, so space runs out quickly — the game ends when the board is full and no merges are possible.
The rules take ten seconds to learn, but reaching 2048 takes real planning. Good players don't chase merges randomly: they build a chain of descending values toward one corner and avoid moves that break the structure. It is a perfect quick brain-teaser for a coffee break, and your best score is saved on your device so you can keep beating yourself.
How to play
- Use the arrow keys / WASD on a computer, or swipe on a phone, to slide all tiles at once.
- Two tiles with the same number merge into one when they collide (2+2=4, 4+4=8 …).
- A new tile appears after every move — keep the board as empty as you can.
- Reach the 2048 tile to win; you can keep playing afterwards for a higher score.
Tips & strategy
- Pick one corner (say bottom-right) and keep your biggest tile there all game.
- Only use two or three of the four directions; avoid the one that pulls tiles away from your corner.
- Merge small tiles early — a board full of 2s and 4s is what usually kills a run.
- Think one move ahead: before swiping, check where the new tile could spawn.
Frequently asked questions
Is 2048 a game of luck?
Mostly no. New tiles spawn randomly, but strategy dominates: a corner-based strategy will get an average player to 512–1024 consistently, and to 2048 with practice.
What is the highest possible tile?
On a 4×4 board the theoretical maximum is 131,072 — far beyond 2048. Most strong players consider 4096 or 8192 an excellent result.
